I'm a UK chef with 0% commission — should I mark myself as tax exempt?
Not because of your commission rate, no.
Why UK chefs see 0% commission
UK chefs pay 0% commission — this means ChefMaison isn't retaining any commission from UK bookings at all, so we have no income (and therefore no tax liability) on those bookings. That's the entire reason it's 0%.
Why this doesn't answer the tax-exempt question
Your commission being 0% only reflects that ChefMaison isn't earning (and isn't taxed) on your bookings — it has no bearing on the VAT you should be charging your own clients on your own items. Commission and your personal tax status are two separate things (see Commission vs. VAT/Tax — they're not the same thing).
What actually determines it
Whether you should be marked tax exempt depends entirely on your own business's tax framework — for example, whether you're VAT-registered, below your local registration threshold, or covered by a specific exemption (see What does "tax exempt" mean, and when does it apply?). That's a question for your accountant, based on your actual legal status — never something to infer from the commission percentage you see on ChefMaison.
We do support setting 0% VAT on your items where it's genuinely applicable to your business — but whether that applies to you depends entirely on how your business is set up and registered, not on what ChefMaison charges you.
💡 If you're unsure, check with your accountant first — we can explain how the platform and commission work, but we can't advise on your personal tax situation.
